Rob – CEO
As CEO, Rob’s job is to ensure that we create a culture that means we deliver a fantastic customer experience throughout the various elements of the business – fun wall, bouldering, studio, café, corporate. This means talking to and listening to customers, refining, and innovating the service we provide while motivating our staff to deliver our vision with enthusiasm and passion. Rob also likes to keep track of developments in the indoor climbing industry so that we stay ahead of trends.
Rob started climbing in the Italian Alps and still enjoys mountaineering and climbing high peaks in the Alps when he can get away from the centre. More recently, his passion has turned to trad climbing but enjoys all types of climbing, on all types of rock (including sandstone!)
Rob has a 2nd Dan in Shotokan karate from the Japan Karate Association, studying for 11 years until injury ended his training.
Ed – Director & Centre Manager
Responsible for the climbing side of the business, Ed is our Centre Manager, he runs the centre and herds the staff. Always on hand around the centre to help and make sure everyone enjoys their experience at TCE.
Ed enjoys a good adventure, whether it’s exploring caves, floating down rivers or scaling rock. He is happiest when multi-pitch trad climbing in North Wales.
Known for his speedy, dynamic climbing, Ed currently holds the record on our speed wall in the Fun Wall, occasionally you’ll find him exhibiting his skills when requested.
Emily – Assistant Centre Manager
Emily is the Assistant Centre Manager here at TCE; her job role contains a lot of “behind the scenes” centre operations work. She assists Ed in the running of the centre, allowing him to take the occasional day off. She runs the Ladies Social climbing group, as well as being an experienced climbing coach.
One of her favourite climbing experiences has been completing the Via Ferrata on Mt. Norquay in Banff, Canada. However, she never gets bored of going back to her roots and climbing the crags in Swanage and Portland where she grew up – “the sunsets there are something else!”.
Ceri – Head of The Fun Wall & Retail
Ceri is our Fun Wall Manager and is also responsible for TCE shop. He ensures that kids always have a great time when they visit and is often found working on our party offerings to make sure everyone that visits has a great birthday with us. In his role as Head of Retail, Ceri makes sure we always have the latest gear in stock and spends a lot of time researching climbing products; so if you’ve got questions about gear, shoes, and anything in between, Ceri is the guy to go to!
Ceri’s favourite route is ‘Flakes’ at Harrison’s rocks because although he is yet to top it, he finds the sequence of moves enjoyable and challenging in equal measure.
Occasionally Zak will let Ceri loose on a reset, so if you find a Dyno that only looks possible if you’re a giant, Ceri probably put it on the wall!
Ceri also has the very serious extra title of ‘Executive vice-president in charge of sofa numeration’, required to know exactly how many sofas are in the centre at all times.
Zak – Head of Routesetting
Zak is the head setter at The Climbing Experience. Routesetting is essentially the creation of indoor climbing problems and it’s Zak’s role to organise this in our bouldering areas. Occasionally he’ll put a few blocs up himself, you can usually find these based on whether you need to jam your hands and feet in between volumes!
Zak’s climbing highlights have been watching the sunrise beneath him at the summit of Mt. Kenya, and bouldering in Rocklands in South Africa. That said, he’ll often tell you that there’s nothing better than soaking up some history on the classic Lakeland trad multi-pitches.
Contrary to popular TCE myth, Zak does in fact own several pairs of climbing shoes, although seeing them in use is about as rare as unicorn dust.
